The investigation into the death of a Bloomington man continues as officials conduct additional interviews.
The body of William F. Kline, 52, was found last Thursday behind Marsh Supermarket on Bloomington’s West side. The results of an autopsy indicated Cline died of blunt force trauma and the death was ruled a homicide, according to a Bloomington Police Department press release. Cline had internal injuries to his uppser torso and arms.
The initial investigation revealed that there was an altercation between Cline and John D. Cornett, 42. At about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, BPD received a call regarding Cornett who appeared to have been in a fight. Cornett was found walking through the strip mall near Marsh Supermarket, 3516 W. Third St.
Police responded to the scene and learned that Cornett had be involved in an altercation with Cline at a homeless camp set up in a wooded area behind Marsh.
Cornett told officers that Cline stabbed him in the face with a broken alcohol bottle. He told officers he pushed Cline away from him and then left the area. A third party called officers and identified Cline as the man responsible for Cornett’s injuries. Officers found Cline unresponsive at the camp. He was transported to the Bloomington Hospital but died shortly later.
Cornett was transported to the Bloomington Hospital due to injuries sustained in the altercation. Officers waited for his release Sunday due to a warrant for Parole Violation. He was transported to the Monroe County Jail, where he has a hold placed on him by the Indiana Department of Correction.
The homicide investigation continues with additional interviews planned along with an evaluation by investigators of evidence gathered at the scene.
