Sidetracked

SONG: Dragonfly
ARTIST: M. Craft

This artist is finally managing to make a name for himself, and he does so through his rich voice and dramatic melodies. One of his top songs, “Dragonfly,” takes the listener through a slow build up that leads to the euphoric climax of the song where all appreciation for the song is gained. Craft radiates loads of creativity and originality, and don’t be surprised when you see his name pop up much more in the future.
GRADE: A-

SONG: Daylight
ARTIST: Aesop Rock

Psychedelic jazz-esque background music with fast-paced, powerful lyrics. Yeah, you have heard nothing like Aesop Rock before. This guy is truly on his own agenda and is a real poet. “Daylight” is dark, twisted and way above my head or anybody’s who is not on hardcore drugs. “All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day, put the pieces back together my way.”
GRADE: A

SONG: Lately
ARTIST: Helio Sequence

An optimistic song that sounds like a mix of Snow Patrol and The Shins. The duo that forms Helio Sequence is Brandon Summers on guitar/vocals and Modest Mouse drummer Benjamin Weikel. “Lately” is a simple, light-hearted pop song about telling your ex to politely piss off. “I’m living alone, I don’t need you anymore.”
GRADE: A

SONG: Corn Bead
ARTIST: Freestyle Fellowship

“Where in the hell did the hip-hop go? Yo Aceyalone do ya know? Do ya know?” Corn Bread is feel good music to its core. You can’t help but dance, and if you don’t, then damn you. Goofy, flimsy and witty lyrics with a consistent hip-hop beat with the occasional break sums the song up. If you’re a fan of Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” or a 90’s kid you’ll love this song so “Eat a watermelon and walk on the moon.”
GRADE: B
