Memorial Day a time of rememberance

War is something that still hits home for Vietnam War veteran Larry Summitt. \n“My son has currently been in the military for 16 years. He’s served in both Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.\nSummitt is also a local Commander of the American Legion, and is one who sees and appreciates Memorial Day for exactly what it is. “It’s a day to remember all of the people who died serving our nation,” he said.\nFor Memorial Day Summit, as well as many other Legion members, plan to place American flags on the headstones of fallen soldiers at Rose Hill Cemetery. \nThis holiday weekend is one of remembrance, as well as a reason for families all across the country to get together to share love and memories of the past in honor of their lost family members.\nNot everyone will be visiting cemeteries on Monday. Vietnam War veteran and American Legion member John Hodges of Bedford is using Memorial Day to see those closest to him. \n“I’m spending time with my family for Memorial Day,” Hodges said.\nMemorial Day means different things to different people. Some have close friends currently in the military while others may not know anyone. Then there are those who are currently serving our country in some capacity. \nSophomore Dana Howe sees Memorial Day as a day of thanks. \n“I use Memorial Day to thank the people I know who are personally serving our country for their sacrifice,” Howe said.\nJunior Daniel Brown is currently involved in the military through the Army Reserves. He sees Memorial Day as a very important holiday. \n“To me, it’s about the pride of our nation and the sacrifice. The reason I’m here today is because of what the war veterans did for our country,” Brown said. “On Memorial Day I call my brother, relax, and take the day off because it’s what Americans deserve.”
