Green Day stops, drops and rocks you

Bassist Mike Dirnt makes a change of pace with his role in Foxboro Hot Tubs.

After Green Day released the uber popular

American Idiot in 2004, fans have been eagerly awaiting the band’s next project. For a while, the band said they were working on a new record, but nothing ever came of it. Then, in December 2007, the band Foxboro Hot Tubs popped up on the Internet with songs including vocals that sounded eerily like those of Green Day’s vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong. Eventually, the cat got out of the bag, and it was announced that Foxboro Hot Tubs was the new side project of the band. They've since released their debut Stop Drop and Roll!!

Most of the tracks on

Stop see the members of Green Day attempting to escape the sound they made on American Idiot . There’s not a lot of soaring hooks here, but instead they’re replaced with a visceral garage rock sound that actually fits the band really well. The songs here are short and sweet: they quickly make you want to tap your foot and then get out. \n

The first single, "Mother Mary,"is probably the most catchy and mainstream of all the songs on the album. It sounds like it would have been a top 20 hit back in the 1960s, with bouncing guitar riffs and Armstrong’s droning vocals. Oooahs, aahs, and bababas also add another classic layer to the song in the attempt to transfer the listener back to the past.

"She’s a Saint Not a Celebrity," is a track that mixes old Green Day sound with whatever they’re going for with Foxboro Hot Tubs. It opens with a familiar guitar riff and then kicks in with one that hurries along at a breakneck pace.

The twangy, country-infused "The Pedestrian" is another standout here. This is a track where it’s truly apparent the guys are trying to do something different. Even with the more honky-tonk vibe, there is a killer guitar solo near the end that really makes the song.

Stop Drop and Roll!!

was probably made in an attempt to distance themselves from the sound that made them so huge, and it’s a success. Now Green Day should be refreshed enough to come back and write a new album once another president they hate takes office.
