3 doors down from the past

3 Doors Down’s Greg Upchurch means business
during live performances.

3 Doors Down have been one of the most successful alternative acts to grace the genre since the year 2000, when their smash debut album

The Better Life sold over seven million copies, thanks to the success of radio singles like "Kryptonite," "Loser" and "Be Like That." Since then, they’ve had two multi-platinum albums and generally tour around 300 venues a year. The band’s self-titled release is their fourth studio album and first since 2005’s Seventeen Days.

The first single and easily the best song is "It’s Not My Time." The song starts off like many 3 Doors Down songs: Soft arpeggiated guitars, a turn to hard rock power chords, and then repeat. The song sounds like a mix of "When I’m Gone" and "Let Me Go," hit singles the band released on their last two albums. Lead singer Brad Arnold’s voice sounds as familiar as ever, as he paints the memorable melody through the chorus. "It’s Not My Time" will likely be another radio hit that will propell the band to at least another well-selling album.

"Runaway " is an upbeat number that goes from breezy ‘80s pop/rock à la Jackson Browne to a good rock sound serve as a lost track from

The Better Life . While the band leaves their stamp on the track, it almost sounds as if it was written by another artist. "Runaway" is a refreshing change on this album that provides hope to fans looking for 3 Doors Down to stray somewhat from the over-produced, radio-friendly sound that has permeated the previous two albums. \n

Ultimately, this CD sounds more like their past two CDs and less like the hard rock sound that was on their successful debut. The typical song on this self-titled album is a brooding hard rock power ballad; one that many have heard plenty of on the radio. None of the songs are bad, but most come off as sounding a bit tired.
