I am writing in regard to the eating disorder “story” that was recently in the Health and Science section, “Distorting body image” (Feb. 19). I was expecting to find a well-written, in-depth look at a serious problem that affects many, including students here at IU. I was really disappointed with the lack of information and amazed that an under grad was considered a valid source for this sort of thing, especially when there are so many people to talk to that could have shed some much-needed light on this sensitive topic. There are numerous people available at the Health Center and professors at the HPER who probably would have been better to talk to. I was also shocked to find out that no resources or suggestions on finding help were mentioned in the story. There are even signs put up in the stalls of bathrooms that I’ve been in that were not only more informative but provided information on getting help. Wouldn’t it have been better to include information on these free resources to give people with eating disorders a little encouragement? I hope that next time an article on a topic like this is run that more thought gets put into it.
