November marks the beginning of flu season. The IU Health Center is offering flu shots by appointment to University students and employees to prevent the virus’ spread on campus.\nHealth Center Medical Director Diana Ebling said she encourages everyone on campus to get the vaccination.\nEbling said flu shots can “reduce your chances of feeling miserable with fever, body aches and cough due to influenza” and “reduce your risk of complications from influenza such as pneumonia.”\nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control Web site, the flu – a “contagious respiratory illness” caused by the influenza virus – can lead to grave illnesses, such as congestive heart failure, asthma and sometimes even death. The CDC says getting the vaccination is the “single best way” to protect oneself from the virus.\nThe CDC warns, though, that people who are battling a severe illness with a fever should avoid the vaccination. Ebling said the most common side effect is “mild soreness at the injection spot,” which usually lasts one to two days.\nEbling said one huge misconception many students have about the vaccination is that it can actually give the person flu.\n“The viruses in the flu shot are killed – inactivated,” Ebling said. “So you cannot get the flu from the shot.”\nStill, some students are hesitant to get the vaccination because they feel the cost and possibility of side effects are simply not worth it. Junior Ashley Crane said she has not gotten the vaccination for these reasons.\n“It’s not really worth the hassle for me,” she said. “ Besides, I haven’t gotten (the flu) yet. I’m healthy.”\nStudents are considered to be at-risk for catching the virus no matter how healthy they are because they come in close contact with others in classes, greek houses, residence halls and at various social events.\nThe vaccinations cost $17.25 for students who have paid the health fee and $21.25 for other students or University employees. Individuals can call the Health Center at 855-7688 or walk in to make an appointment from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Monday through Friday.
