‘Rocky Horror’ back at Buskirk

Georgia Perry

This Halloween, students can be de-virginized the Rocky Horror way. \nThe local Cardinal Stage Company will present the “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” today at 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. \nThe musical movie was originally filmed in the late 1970s and has since reached cult status. \nBuskirk-Chumley Executive Director Danielle McClelland said when the movie came out, it was not popular in the mainstream.\n“It became popular in the sub cultures and the popularity still continues today,” she said. \nBefore it became a musical movie, it was a play in the late 1960s and later became an interactive production.\n“People began performing the movie in front while it was being shown,” McClelland said. “It became a performative show.”\nThis year’s local show is expected to be a fun and anticipated event. McClelland encourages people to get their tickets early. In the past, at least one of the two evening shows has sold out, she said. \nThose who have never experienced the show before will be “de-virginized” a half hour before the production. During the “de-virginization” process, the newcomers get clued in on jokes, learn the songs and generally loosen up. \n“It is an opportunity to express an outrageous sense of liberation and fun when it comes to letting it all hang out,” said Randy White, the artistic director of Cardinal Stage Company. \n This year, White said everyone can be a part of the Rocky Horror experience. The show will hold a rehearsal at 4 p.m. today for anyone who wants to be in the show. \n“It’s a way to express inner self freedom,” White said.\nAttendees are not allowed to bring their own props and will be asked to check big bags at the door. Props may be bought at the door. \n“It’s a bunch of people dressed up, and no one judges anybody,” White said.
