Demetri Martin. Person. Grade: B+ Extras: A-

Hilarious 'Person'

any people believe that stand-up comedy has gotten stale. But there seems to be a new wave of comedians coming up and trying new and creative approaches. One of these comedians is Demetri Martin, who is best known for his work as a "Daily Show" correspondent. Demetri uses a slew of one-liners, which are made all the better with his unique visual aid and musical accompaniment. His act is captured to perfection in this one hour special, "Person," which originally aired on Comedy Central in January. The special runs through his various talents, which are all displayed here on "Person." \nThe special opens up with him performing straight-up stand-up. Whether it's his analysis on rock-paper-scissors or the best way to add insult to injury, Martin hits on all cylinders. Then he moves into his "Findings," which are his drawings. This is Martin's finest bit, in that the drawings greatly complement his jokes. His breakdown of Hummer owners and his pie chart on procrastination are simply classic. Then he moves onto two musical bits, first playing guitar and harmonica along with his jokes, and then playing piano to go along with another set of drawings. While the drawings cover a wide range of topics, all prove to be quite comical. Finally, he closes with a theater bit of sorts, in which he does a song about where his jokes go after they are told, with the story being played out by other comedians. \nThe theater bit proves to be the weakest point of the show, as many of the characters and story falls flat. The cartoon segues are also pretty poor and prove to be more strange than humorous. \nHowever, that's where the bonus features come in. The DVD comes packed with extras. The DVD includes his half-hour "Comedy Central Presents" show, deleted scenes and parts of three of his early comedy gigs. There are also some very unnecessary and somewhat stupid extras, including his "Behind the Joke" bit, and a two-minute clip of a "Creep Eating an Ice Cream Pop." So if you enjoy Demetri Martin or just good stand-up, this DVD is filled with loads of goodies and provides a good bang for your buck.
