The keepers of the bar: Bob Hebenstreit

Wisdom from Nick's bartender "Hebe"

Bob "Hebe" Hebenstreit tends bar at Nick's English Hut on Aug. 20.

Life outlook\n"Just enjoy life. The people and the places."

On curing a hangover\n"The only real cure is to have another beer. Otherwise just suffer through it."

On IU basketball\n"What I remember most was in '76. I was working in The Regulator. IU had just won the national championship. We were selling beer by the front door for carryout, six-packs. A guy crashed his car into a telephone pole. The cops show up, and so does an ambulance. They put him in a stretcher and they carry him across the street to the ambulance. On the stretcher, he puts up his finger and starts screaming, 'We're number one! We're number one!'"

On IU students\n"I got a good friend that went to law school here. He would come in, do a little reading, have a sandwich and a beer or two. I got to know him because he was a regular. I have friends all over the country that I've known for years who as students frequented wherever I was bartending."

On talking politics or religion at a bar\n"I don't see too much controversy discussing politics at the bar. Everyone enjoys talking local politics. With religion, people go crazy. Religion is the worst topic to discuss."

On imparting wisdom to younger bartenders\n"Just treat people like you are having a party at your house. Find out what they want and get it for them. Give them a pleasurable experience. I think when you help people out, they appreciate it, and they'll come back and say thanks. I've always thought that worked out."\n"We try to tell them the things that will help but everybody has their own personality. In Bloomington, there are a lot of personalities. You gotta let people be themselves."

On a change of atmosphere\n"Bar owners are constantly upgrading their televisions and the cleanliness of the bar to compete with other bars in town. It wasn't always that way. You used to have your regulars and that was that. But now you're out competing for the same customers. The nicer you can keep your place, the better you will do. It's great for the customer"
