Hoosiers look to rebound after being 'overconfident'

Coach Mayer wants team to peak 'at the right time'

After coming into their first event "overconfident," the now-humbled Hoosiers will look to this weekend's Gopher Invitational for a chance at redemption.\nLast fall, IU struggled as its young but talented lineup learned the ropes of collegiate golf. It took two victories and several other top-five finishes in the spring to overcome that start and put the Hoosiers in the NCAA Regionals. IU coach Mike Mayer's goal for this fall was to avoid putting too much pressure on the team in the spring by competing for titles from the beginning of the season.\n"The last three years, we've made the NCAA tournament, which is a great accomplishment to do," Mayer said, "but we had to work extremely hard coming down the stretch to do that. We were forced to peak early. This year, we want to peak at the right time."\nThe Hoosiers were far from peaking in their first tournament, finishing in eighth place despite sophomore Jorge Campillo -- last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year -- tying for third place. Fellow sophomore Brandon Pike said Campillo can't be the only one playing well. \n"It's gonna take a team effort," Pike said. "Jorge's played well. ... We just need to all help him out and play as well as we possibly can."\nIn addition to tournament host Minnesota, IU will compete at the event against three other Big Ten schools, including Ohio State, Michigan State and defending Big Ten champion Northwestern. Sophomore Seth Brandon said that while getting a look at their Big Ten foes is important, the Hoosiers have the same goal no matter who they play.\n"We want to beat every single team we play against," he said.\nAccording to Mayer, the Hoosiers need to be more ready if they hope to do better this time.\n"I don't know how prepared we were coming in (to the first event)," he said. "There's no question I'm going to coach them more this event than I did the last event."\nAfter failing to play up to their own expectations last weekend, the Hoosiers will again try to get an early start on the path to the NCAA tournament. Pike said the team's first event may have altered its mentality, but it didn't change its goals.\n"We know that we're vulnerable now," he said. "We know that we can be beaten and beaten pretty badly. ... We go to every tournament to beat as many quality teams as we can. It can be South Bend Community College, but we want to beat them. It doesn't really matter what the name on that bag says"
