After losing a double-overtime thriller to Ohio State 6-5 in late November 2005, the IU hockey team sought revenge against its conference rivals this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. \nHowever, the two-game set didn't go as planned as the Hoosiers came away with two ties, 5-5 and 6-6. \nIn game one, after taking a 5-4 advantage in the third period, IU was unable to hold onto the lead as Ohio State evened up the game on a goal past IU junior goaltender Brien McCormick with about 10 minutes remaining to play. Although they outshot the Buckeyes by a 49-22 margin, the Hoosiers missed late-game opportunities to put away their conference foe and earn the victory. \nIU came into the game having scored 24 goals in its last two games, but it couldn't find the net in the closing period as Ohio State goalie Dru Delaforet stopped 10 shots in the period and 44 in the game. \nIU sophomore forward Dan Karlander continued his strong play by scoring his first hat-trick of the season and also added his 21st assist. Junior forward Reed Schafer notched his ninth and 10th goals of the season while dishing out two assists.\nIU senior defenseman and team captain Bill Ravensberg said he felt his team played too inconsistently throughout the contest.\n"We played really well at times and not so well at other times," he said. "As a result of our sporadic play, instead of getting the win, we got the tie. Give (Ohio State) credit -- whenever we made a mistake, they capitalized on it."\nIn the final match-up of the series, IU let a 6-2 third-period lead slip away. Taking an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by senior forward Pete Johnson, IU increased its lead to 4-1 in the second period on goals from freshman forward David Murray and Karlander. After the two teams traded goals early in the third period, junior forward Matt Henderson tallied his third goal of the season, giving IU the 6-2 lead. Putting constant pressure on the Buckeyes, the Hoosiers fired 46 shots on goal, but it wasn't enough as Ohio State scored four unanswered goals past junior goalie Jimmy Hugill in the last six minutes of play, the last goal coming with 20 seconds left to match the Hoosiers.\nAlthough IU coach Rich Holdeman said he knows how hard it is to win on the road, he said he was disappointed with how the weekend turned out.\n"In the big picture, coming away with two ties on the road against a tough team is not too bad," he said. "But given that we out-shot them on Friday and had a four-goal lead with six minutes to go on Saturday, it does not feel very satisfying."\nJohnson agreed with Holdeman's assessment and said he believes his team has to play hard from start to finish to be triumphant.\n"Good teams find ways to win in situations like we encountered this weekend, and we haven't been doing that," he said. "We need to play the full 60 minutes of every game. We played great hockey for 53 minutes on Saturday, but spent the last seven minutes in panic mode. Good teams don't panic like that. They find a way to win."\nThe Hoosiers, 11-9-2 on the season, played host to two big weekend match-ups starting Friday night against Michigan State Karlander said he feels contributions must come from other Hoosiers for them to have success the rest of the season.\n"We really need to get a solid effort from the whole team," he said. "Right now we have some players that are not playing to their potential"
