Tower features 42-bell carillon

Structure dedicated in 1970 to honor Dr. Arthur R. Metz

At IU's highest point stands a structure that pays tribute to one of its most esteemed alumni. The Arthur R. Metz Memorial Carillon honors Metz, a "distinguished student and student benefactor," according to the message engraved on the A-sharp of one of its bells. \nWeighing more than 6,900 pounds, that note is the largest of 42 bells contained in the tower and promises that Metz's "loyalty and dedication to his alma mater shall perpetually reverberate by means of this symbol throughout the campus he loved." \nMetz graduated from IU in 1909 and went on to a successful career as a surgeon at Chicago's Wesley Memorial Hospital, even working as the personal physician to the famed Wrigley family. In 1953, IU honored Metz with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. He immediately formed a board of all the past winners, which he presided over until his death in 1963.\nEight years later, during homecoming 1972, the tower and carillon were dedicated in Metz's honor, as a donation to IU from his foundation. A smaller practice and teaching carillon was donated at the same time. That instrument is still played today atop the School of Music. \nOver the years, the Metz Memorial Carillon has served as the site of concerts, memorial bell ringings and teaching sessions.
