Police arrested a student outside the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity for indecent exposure Monday evening. \nAdam Recker, 19, claimed to be on heroin, cocaine and alcohol when he was arrested on preliminary charges of indecent exposure in front of the fraternity at 1500 N. Jordan Ave. IU Police Department officers arrived on the scene at 5:54 p.m. Recker came out of the fraternity looking confused, wearing a white tank top and khaki shorts, with his genitals exposed, said IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger.\nOfficer Jennifer Buttice, who was first on the scene, said she noticed Recker was intoxicated because of his strange behavior. \n"Recker looked at me blankly, and right away I could tell something was wrong with his state of mind," she said. "When I asked him to do a simple thing like putting his hands on my squad car, he seemed confused and disoriented."\nButtice then called for backup to apprehend Recker. According to police reports, he cooperated with the officers at first, but as Buttice tried to handcuff him Recker resisted. It took the four officers on the scene to subdue him. They tackled him to the ground as he continued to struggle. According to the reports, the officers had to flex-cuff Recker's ankles to keep him from kicking.\nButtice said she was glad enough police were on hand to control the subject. \n"When you are in another state of mind induced by alcohol or a controlled substance, I have found that people are more likely to fight to the end and with everything they have," she said. "He was a good-sized boy and when he shoved me, we were just not going to have that. But, yes, it did take every officer on scene to control him."\nAn ambulance transported Recker to Bloomington \nHospital. Sgt. Donald Schmuhl, one of the officers at the scene, said Recker was not in a state to be sent to jail right away. \n"The jail would not have accepted him in his state of intoxication," he said.\nRecker was released around 11 p.m. Monday, according to the hospital. The hospital was not allowed to release other information about Recker at press time.\nSchmuhl did not notice any evidence that Recker was injured during the incident. "I saw some scuffs on his knees," he said. "I'm not aware of any injuries he got from being arrested."\nButtice said none of the officers sustained serious injuries during the struggle. \n"We are still not sure exactly when and how (Officer Thomas) Kuhlenschmidt was injured during the struggle," Buttice said. "It was a cut on his hand requiring no medical attention. I was pushed but not injured."\nRepresentatives from the Sigma Alpha Mu house requested the officers advise Recker of trespassing, meaning any further visits will be illegal. Several members of the house witnessed the apprehension. However, due to a house policy, members of Sigma Alpha Mu are not allowed to make comments to the media.\nShortly after the arrest, police went to Recker's residence in Briscoe Quad to search his room. According to the report, his roommate gave officers permission to search. Schmuhl said nothing of consequence was found in Recker's dorm room, and the incident shouldn't be viewed with too much \nseverity. \n"I think that this kid went over there, unfortunately, and probably, because of what he had ingested, did something he probably ordinarily wouldn't have done," Schmuhl said.\nNeither Recker nor his roommate were answering their dorm telephone Tuesday for comment.\nRecker has been charged preliminarily with public intoxication, public indecency, resisting law enforcement and battery on a police officer.
