Campus, city offer parking amnesty through Monday

Enforcement relaxed for harried students, parents

Incoming students and belabored parents don't need to worry about obeying parking laws as they move in this week. \nBloomington and IU Parking Operations will not be ticketing drivers who don't have parking tags, at least until Monday when classes resume, according to parking officials.

\nFor those parking in any of the nine residential zones which surround the IU campus, the era of immunity ends at 8 a.m. Monday when anyone without a parking decal will be ticketed. Parking decals can be obtained at City Hall, located at 401 N. Morton St., west of campus. \nJack Davis, parking enforcement manager for Bloomington said this is a hectic week for parking operations. Frustration can be avoided if people show up with the proper documents: current vehicle registration and a copy of their current lease. \nPermits are $15 and there is no limit on how many will be sold for each zone, although each person in a house can buy only one, said Davis. Each house is eligible for one visitor permit, also $15. Students living with multiple roommates, or rooming houses are not exempt from this rule. However, if you have more visitors than passes parking officers will avoid ticketing their cars if you call parking enforcement and provide license plate numbers and descriptions of the vehicles.\nCurrently, vehicles without permits are given red tags. Davis wants people to know that these are not parking tickets, but simply reminders to residents to buy their permits before Monday.

\nIU students can order lettered permits, although most are restricted to D or E permits. D lots are located next to the residence halls and are divided into seven regions. Permits may be ordered through Residential Programs and Services.\nE lots are located at Assembly Hall and Memorial Stadium.\nStudents wanting to park in D zones are issued permits based on their housing priority dates. Those who applied to housing earliest will get D permits first. Freshmen who would like to park in areas heavily populated with upperclassmen such as Willkie or Forest will be low on the waitlist for a permit.\nWhile D lots will be ticketed beginning 7 a.m. Monday, E lots will go unpatrolled for the next month. Beginning 7 a.m. Oct. 1, IU Parking Operations said they will begin ticketing in E lots. \nOnly faculty and employees can buy A or C permits for lots located centrally to campus academic buildings. \nDoug Porter, parking manager for IU Parking Operations, said students don't need constant vehicle access to these areas. \n"There are other ways to get around campus -- it's a pedestrian campus," Porter said.\nHe advises students to use the campus bus system. Students this year pay a mandatory transportation fee and can ride IU and city buses for free simply by showing their student IDs.
