A Merrell Bros. tanker carrying hazardous material turned on its side Wednesday on the northbound exit from 2nd St. to Highway 37. There were no other vehicles involved and no one was injured in the accident.\nAccording to Bloomington Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Webb, the tanker leaked the unidentified material it was carrying as well as hydraulic fluid and diesel fuel. Webb said it was unknown how the tanker turned. \nThe northbound exit to Highway 37 was closed while workers cleaned up the spill, digging up the ground around the spill to avoid saturation of hazardous wastes into the soil. \n"We have diked and contained the spill," Webb said. "The rain has complicated our efforts, however."\nA downpour that began at approximately 1 p.m. forced the firefighters and police officers into their vehicles and held back the clean-up efforts.\nWebb said once all the remaining fluid was transferred to another tanker and he was confident the area was secure, the fire department would begin to turn the tanker back upright and re-open the exit.
