Robbery reported at ATO fraternity

Alpha Tau Omega fraternity on 720 East 3rd Street was once again the scene of a crime, currently under the investigation of the IU Police Department.\nAccording to IUPD police reports, House Director David Bender contacted the IUPD Wednesday morning to report a theft. A television, surround-sound system and two leather couches were stolen from the house sometime on Tuesday. Bender told IUPD the theft could have occurred as early as 2 p.m. \nAccording to IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger, officers arrived at ATO around 9 a.m. Wednesday and found broken glass and furniture scattered throughout the room, pictures knocked off the walls and a metal bar that might have been used to pry open a door to the house. The house was empty at the time of the theft.\nBender also reported vandalism that occurred at ATO May 7. According to IUPD police reports, Bender left the house at 5 p.m. May 7 and everything was fine. When he returned that night, he discovered seven broken windows, six smashed fire extinguisher covers, a hole in a wall on the second floor and black paint on the living room carpet. Damage to the building was estimated at $1,200. \nBender could not be reached as of press time.\n"It's a shame that stuff like this happens," said ATO member and sophomore Ryan Ault. "It makes the guys in the house look bad."\nAult had already left IU by Saturday and was unaware of the crimes. He said ATO has dealt with incidents of vandalism at the house before.\n"We had a new system with trying to fix those problems," Ault said. "We were a lot better with our house this year."\nJunior Matt Carter, also a member of ATO, said he hopes the theft and vandalism doesn't continue. \nMinger said the theft and the previous vandalism are both still under investigation and there are no suspects.\nIf anyone has information pertaining to the theft or vandalism, they are asked to contact IUPD at 855-4111.
