2 ranked opponents equal 2 road losses

With this weekend's two road losses to No. 18 Tennessee and No. 3 Kentucky, the IU women's tennis team failed to repeat its performances from last year.\nThe No. 29 Hoosiers, who bested both teams at home when they were ranked above them, posted their first loss (4-1 decision) Saturday afternoon at Tennessee's Goodfriend Tennis Center.\nThings looked good for IU in the beginning as sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams won the first doubles contest at the No. 2 spot (8-3). After a loss at the No. 3 spot, the doubles point came down to a close contest in the No. 1 position. Junior Sarah Batty and sophomore Kara Zeder went up early 6-4, but the Vols fought back to a 9-7 win for the match and the doubles point.\nBatty scored the lone point for IU in her 6-2, 6-3 besting of the Vols' Blakely Griffith.\n"I played really well and I kind of didn't let her get into the match," Batty said. "I think I just played really aggressively."\nThe Hoosiers then sustained their second loss of the weekend (6-1) Sunday morning at Kentucky's Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex.\nIU lost the doubles point and won only one of the six singles matches.\nBut coach Lin Loring said the score wasn't indicative of how his team played.\n"We played very well today," Loring said. "I was very pleased with our singles play -- we were in every singles match."\nThe Hoosiers took every singles match to three sets with the exception of senior Dora Vastag.\nSophomore Cecile Perton scored the Hoosiers' only point in the No. 6 singles spot and saved IU from the blanking.\n"The girl I played, her game matched well with my game," Perton said. "I just think my forehand was really going."\nAt the weekend's end IU is 4-5 on the season and will play again next weekend at home against Marquette, Western Michigan and Texas Christian Univeristy.\n-- Contact Staff Writer Andy \nRomey at aromey@indiana.edu.
