I note that a panel appointed by the state legislature has recommended that the emphasis on undergraduate education in the Bloomington campus should be reduced, that the focus here should be on research and technology. I recall that the same proposal was made in Michigan, perhaps 50 years ago. Powerful alumni of the Ann Arbor campus promptly put an end to such nonsense. They feared that to cut back the number of undergraduates sharply would have a catastrophic affect on the university's successful sports programs.\nTurn the University of Michigan into an MIT or a Cal Tech? Never. In any event, all professors should be teaching the younger students as well as the Ph.D. candidates. The freshmen and sophomores deserve the attention of fine scholars, also. Anyway, that's what we have thought in the history department since I came here in 1950.\nRobert E. Quirk\nFaculty
