Sun sets on impressive sequel

"If only" might have been the tagline of this film. Richard Linklater's beautiful little film "Before Sunset" is the best film to come out this year. It's an extension of 1994's "Before Sunrise," which was equally wonderful. If you haven't seen "Sunrise," your experience with "Sunset" will be compromised.\nThe film is a wonder, but it doesn't provide any easy answers. It made me want to be 23 again, and I'm only 20. In "Sunrise," Celine (Delpy) and Jesse (Hawke) meet in Vienna and spend the night talking and (ostensibly) falling in love. In "Sunset," it is nine years later, and the two meet up in Paris again. They have an hour in which to say all they need to say. \nThe first bit is filled with all the awkwardness of remeeting someone, but the two quickly find their groove and talk for the rest of the movie. Ninety percent of it is a shot of the two, walking side by side, and talking about all life, love and growing older. The dialogue feels completely natural -- likely because Delpy and Hawke wrote much of it themselves. They dodge the obvious questions about romantic status until the end, but the revelations lay the ground for the most poignant moments.\nThe film is challenging, as it addresses some of the heaviest weights on the soul without actually getting heavy. "Sunset" is kind of like a bit of vitamin-laced chocolate for the soul: it'll make you feel good, but in reality, it's really good for you, too.
