DVD spotlights worst director ever

"Glen or Glenda," "Bride of the Monster," "Plan 9 from Outer Space"? Most people these days have never heard of those films, let alone seen them. They were all directed, albeit haphazardly, by Edward D. Wood Jr., widely considered to be the worst director in film history. Tim Burton's account of the exploits of Wood (now a cult hero) and his motley crew in mid 1950s Hollywood is a modern classic and has been held far too long from DVD.\nBurton and his team of set and production designers created a nostalgic yet sufficiently campy '50s Hollywood scene for the film, but the real credit goes to the actors and primarily to Martin Landau for his powerful, Oscar-winning performance as Bela Lugosi. Depp plays Wood as an egotistic yet cheerfully-confident upstart, and Bill Murray kills as John "Bunny" Breckinridge, an eccentric Hollywood homosexual who defied his time.\nExtras on this long-overdue disc include, but are not limited to, a humorous commentary by Burton and Landau, a candid, Depp-hosted behind-the-scenes doc subtly titled "Let's Shoot This Fucker," and the mini-doc "Making Bela," in which Landau and makeup artist Rick Baker explain the art and artistry behind resurrecting a true film legend. There are also five deleted scenes, two of which are insignificantly brief, one which devolves into cheap toilet humor and one that manages to add even more depth to Landau's portrayal of Lugosi. The final deleted scene features Bill Murray, a meat locker and a mariachi band and must be seen to be believed.\nEd Wood is one of the best comedies of the 1990s, and with Tim Burton's tested prowess in combining his unmistakable visual flair with a deep sense of pure human emotion, this DVD certainly qualifies as a must-own.
