I was distressed by the Indiana Daily Student's editorial about the governor's race that appeared Wednesday. The piece completely missed the point of the story. The fact that Mitch met with a group of Hoosiers to discuss their concerns without inviting the press was not a story. For the past 15 months, Mitch has met with hundreds of teacher groups, students, union leaders, business executives, pastors, minority groups, farmers, Democrats, Independents and Republicans. Mitch does not publicize these meetings because he wants participants to be able to speak with complete candor. This meeting was handled exactly the same way each of those previous meetings were handled and exactly how he will continue to handle these meetings in the future. What was news was the fact that Kernan campaign operatives sent phantom e-mails under a fictitious name in a desperate attempt to undercut Mitch Daniels. While Democrats have denied involvement, they can't change the fact that the e-mails were traced to the Internet Protocol address of the Indiana Democratic Party. The Democrats sent out their fraudulent invitations to this meeting four days in advance, and yet Mitch attended the meeting. Obviously if he wanted it kept secret, he would have canceled it. The grossly inappropriate activities of the Kernan campaign deserve to be reported. The Indiana Daily Student's editorial did a disservice to its readers by missing the point of the story.
