Women's soccer upsets Auburn, FIU\nThe IU women's soccer team traveled to another tournament this past weekend and once again came home with a pair of wins. After a 5-1 victory over Florida International University, the Hoosiers upset No. 18 ranked Auburn Saturday on junior Robin Barker's goal that proved enough to upend the Tigers and finish the tournament with a 1-0 upset.\nBarker scored after receiving a pass from junior captain Kristen Zmijewski and put the ball past Auburn's All-American goalkeeper Megan Rivera at the 44:28 mark for the only goal of the contest.\nIU coach Mick Lyon said the win was great for the program, as it was its first over a ranked opponent since IU beat then No. 11 Ohio State last season in Bloomington.\n"I think this game showed that we can play with the better teams in the country," Lyon said in a statement. "This game also showed that we are learning to deal and play through adversity. We were able to put last weeks game behind us, as well as the weather concerns here and just go out and play a great game."\nIU beat Florida International University 5-1 Friday in its first game of the Miami Invitational thanks to an offensive attack which saw four different Hoosiers score goals.\nSophomore Megan Pipkens got the Hoosiers on the board early, scoring a goal just three minutes into the contest. Freshman Kristin Radcliffe scored her first ever collegiate goal followed by a score from sophomore Carrie DeFreece in the first half.\nBarker pounded the final nail into the coffin scoring two goals in three minutes thanks to the two assists from senior Kim Grodek.\nJanessa Taddei scored the lone goal for the Panthers at the 59-minute mark that was the result of an IU defensive breakdown that allowed FIU into the penalty area.\nThe Hoosiers are currently 4-1 this season and begin Big Ten play against Minnesota Friday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium followed by a Sunday match with Iowa.

Women's cross country team loses by 1 point to Ball St.\nFriday, the women's cross country team lost at the Cream and Crimson meet by one point in a head-to-head meeting with Ball State University. But the team sat some of its top runners including sophomore Jessica Gall, junior Lindsay Hattendorf and freshmen Nikki Peterson. \nRegardless of the loss, the team wasn't disheartened, as IU had three of the top five finishers, including the race winner in junior Kelly Siefker.\nIU coach Judy Wilson was happy with how her women ran. \n"Our top three looked real strong," she said.\nSiefker said the race was a good learning experience.\n"It's nice to start with a 4K," Siefker said. "We had a good start for all."\nSenior Mindy Peterson finished third overall and second for the Hoosiers with a time of 14.33. She shared the same optimism.\n"It's a nice way to start the season," Peterson said. "I'm happy with where I'm at right now."\nSophomore Kristin Whitezell rounded off the top five for the Hoosiers in a time of 14:40. She was followed by senior Julie Shields who placed ninth overall with a time of 15:26.\nThe team will compete again Friday in the Indiana Intercollegiate meet. The meet will be ran in West Lafayette this year and will start at 4:45 p.m.

Golf team struggles to 14th place finish\nThe IU women's golf team opened its fall season this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., at the Lady Northern Invitational. The team finished 14th out of a 15-team field on the University of Michigan Golf Course.\nThe Hoosiers shot a three round team total of 969 (324-327-318), firing their best round, a team score of 318, during the final round of the tournament. \nThe top finisher for the Hoosiers was junior Lissa Putnam, who finished tied for 61st with a three round total of 242 (85-80-77). Finishing close behind her were teammates senior Bethany Brunner and sophomore Molly Redfearn in 68th. Both carded a total of 244, Brunner did so while shooting 80-84-80, while Redfearn shot 83-83-78. \nAlso finishing for the Hoosiers was freshman Elaine Harris in a tie for 77th with a 248 (78-85-83), freshman Kendal Hake in 93rd with a 263 (83-85-95) and junior Katie Carlson in 95th with a 268 (95-80-93). \nCompeting in the tournament were all 11 Big Ten teams, Notre Dame University, University of Oklahoma, Kent State University and University of Missouri. \nThe Michigan squad took home the Invitational title finishing with a team score of 881 (294-291-296), beating runner-up Ohio State by four strokes. Third place finisher Missouri finished on stroke behind Ohio State.
