MANHATTAN, Ind. -- The pilot of a small, single-engine plane made an emergency landing Wednesday on the median of Interstate 70 in western Indiana.\nCraig Lee Carlson, 49, of Spanaway, Wash., was not injured. The plane, a 1946 Stinson 108, did not appear to be damaged by the landing.\nCarlson said he was flying the plane about 700 feet above the ground when it suddenly developed fuel problems.\nCarlson, a flight instructor and retired California Highway Patrolman, said he did not have much time to scout for a place to land. He radioed a mayday distress call and landed on the median grass in Putnam County at 12:54 p.m.\nThe plane was not blocking any lanes and no significant traffic delays were reported.\nThe plane, which was not damaged in the landing, could not be repaired at the scene, so it was loaded on a flat bed truck and hauled to the Terre Haute Airport.\n"It's a beautiful plane. I had just picked it up out of Ohio," Carlson said.\nCarlson was flying to Tulsa, Okla., accompanied by a friend in another aircraft.\nWatson said Carlson's friend flew onto Terre Haute and returned to the emergency landing site, about four miles west of Indiana 243.
