Journalism Dean inducted into Hall

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Trevor Brown, dean of IU's School of Journalism, and George P. Stewart, founder of the Indianapolis Recorder, are among five people to be inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame next month.\nThe others selected were Steve Bell, a telecommunications professor at Ball State University and a former ABC News reporter and anchor; Henry Gill, a photographer who grew up in Washington, Ind., and covered events around the world; and Edward Spray, the president of Scripps Networks.\nBrown joined IU's journalism faculty in 1972 and became the dean of the nationally recognized school in 1985. He is retiring as dean this year. He was named the Journalism Administrator of the Year in 2001 by The Freedom Forum.\nStewart co-founded the Indianapolis Recorder in the 1890s, but soon bought out his partner and oversaw the newspaper until his death in 1924. The weekly is still recognized as the leading African-American newspaper in the state.\nBell worked for ABC from 1967 to 1986, with reporting assignments that included the Vietnam War and the White House during the Nixon and Ford administrations. He was the news anchor for several years on "Good Morning America." He joined Ball State's faculty in 1992.\nGill covered assignments in 92 countries during a career that began at his hometown Washington Daily Times. He worked at the Chicago Daily News or Chicago Sun-Times from 1963 to 1983, including six years as director of photography. He then was president and executive editor of Globalfoto News in Rome.\nSpray grew up in Seymour and graduated from IU before starting his career as a film editor and cameraman at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. He later was a producer and broadcasting director at television stations in Chicago and Los Angeles. He joined Cincinnati-based Scripps in 1994, where he helped develop cable's Home & Garden Television.
