Former IU coach files with court of appeals

Knight seeks reversal of dismissed charges

Bob Knight has asked the Indiana Court of Appeals to reconsider his lawsuit against the University, nearly four years after then-president Myles Brand fired him as IU men's basketball coach. \nKnight sued in November 2002, claiming IU violated his contract by not following proper procedures in terminating him.\nThis latest appeal counters an October ruling by Monroe County Circuit Judge Kenneth Todd that dismissed Knight's charges.\nRussell Yates, Knight's attorney, filed a motion in November asserting Todd erred in dismissing the lawsuit without a trial. The motion specifically stated that Knight "maintains that the accusations against him that served as the basis for his termination were unfounded."\nKnight, who claims he lost $2 million in contracts and endorsements after being fired as coach, waived confidentiality rights to his personnel file in October 2001, stating he was "as interested as anyone" in finding out what specifically led to his firing the year before.\nIn a sworn statement obtained by the Indiana Daily Student, Knight maintained he was told he could be terminated if a majority from the board of trustees voted affirmatively to fire him.\nUniversity counsel Dorothy Frapwell maintained IU's position has not changed, despite recent developments. She said IU complied with the terms of Knight's contract in electing to fire him.
