Cats and dogs alike will soon take advantage of new construction efforts taking place at the Bloomington Animal Shelter. A donation of $61,927 made to the city on behalf of the Monroe County Humane Association is making the additions possible.\n"The City of Bloomington is in charge of the construction," said Public Works Director John Freeman said. \nConstruction began in October on a 5,000-square-foot addition which will be added to the shelter, 3410 Old S.R. 37 South, and renovations are planned for the existing building. The addition will aid in the housing of the shelter's many animals and, in the future, add to the possible services and space that the staff can provide for its animals. Construction is expected to be completed early next year. \n"Thanks to the Monroe County Humane Association for this substantial contribution and their continued support of the animal shelter," said Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez in a press release. "Their contribution helps meet the needs of the staff and the animals at the shelter." \nIn October, the shelter held its annual promotion encouraging people in the community to adopt a dog. Incentives were given such as dog food, bowls, toys and a free cleansing coupon for anyone adopting a dog. More than 15 dogs were adopted during the month. A similar campaign takes place each June for cats.\nMany of the animals at the shelter come from the Monroe County area and are collected as either strays found by Animal Control or donated by families who can no longer take care of those animals.\n"The donation will allow us to provide new cat kennels, medical equipment, scales, grooming tubs, an examining table and hopefully to take better care of our animals," said Director of Animal Care and Control Laurie Ringquist. "Also, the shelter plans to cover crucial items such as reroofing the existing building and fixing leaks."\nThe shelter, which opened in 1954, plans to continue as a temporary home to various animals. \nAdoptable animals can be seen at www.monroehumane.com. Also, donations to the shelter can be made on the Web site. There are generally 20 available dogs on the Web site, along with more than 40 cats. \n"As long as there is space we will hold the animals as long as we can," Ringquist said. \nWith the help of the new renovations and construction, the shelter will soon have increased capacity for its animals. While previous efforts like Adopt-a-Dog and Cat months continue, Ringquist said the shelter hopes to eventually have good homes for these animals. \n"We hope to raise awareness for those considering adding an animal into their family," Ringquist said.
