The theme of Under the Tuscan Sun is universal. The film shows the viewer that there is life after suffering a great loss. Most importantly, it exhibits the significance of taking chances, allowing the rest to fall into place. \nBased on Frances Mayes' best-selling novel, Under the Tuscan Sun tells the story of Frances (Diane Lane), a once-established writer who has unexpectedly suffered a divorce from her cheating husband. Her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh) hopes to help by sending her on a tour of the magnificent Italian countryside. In the midst of her tour in Tuscany, she feels she has nothing left to lose and impulsively buys a beautiful yet worn-down villa. The story then follows her on her journey in reconstructing her dream home while attempting to rebuild her life and gain a new sense of self. \nThroughout her journey Frances undergoes the trials and tribulations caused by falling for a sleazy Italian man, trying to cure her writer's block and, most importantly, trying to fill her new home with friends and the love that she once felt. \nThematically and visually this film is golden. From the old Italian traditions to the mouthwatering food to, of course, the Italian men, the director did an amazing job of capturing the heart and soul of Italian culture. Wells should also be commended on showcasing the breathtaking landscapes of Tuscany and the Italian Riviera. The story is character-driven, which caused the plot of this film to lack enough action to keep the viewers' attention throughout. The subplots and minor characters need to be more humorous and unique for the film to have the much-desired perfect mix of a strong theme, memorable characters and an enticing storyline. \nDespite the slow pace, Oscar nominee Diane Lane has stepped out of her normal dramatic roles to make a whimsical dramatic comedy. She is a sympathetic character and has the ability to draw the audience in with her poise and presentation. Breathtaking visuals and a strong premise help make the film worth a trip to the theater. \nHowever, girls, make sure to bring your friends, not your boyfriends, and a box of tissues.
