The Hoosiers had a successful weekend, Iowa 1-0 on the road Friday night and pummeling Marshall 4-0 at home Sunday. With the victories, IU improved its record to 5-6-0 (2-3-0 Big Ten) on the season.\nThe Hoosiers were able to defeat the Hawkeyes with one less player for the greater part of the second half. Senior midfielder Emily Hotz was issued a red card for playing too aggressively. The Hoosiers were able to counter Iowa's extra player, as sophomore forward Robin Barker scored her first goal of the season off a nice pass from freshman forward Carrie DeFreece. Senior goalkeeper Shaunna Daugherty earned the shutout.\nAfter the emotional victory over Iowa, the team returned home for a non-conference game against Marshall. In the first half, neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm. The Hoosiers had enough chances, but weren't able to put in a goal before the half.\n"At the half, we made a mental adjustment," coach Mick Lyon said. "In the first half, we didn't come out focused to play. Then of course, we came out and scored in the first few minutes, and then scored some more goals. We played outstanding in the second half."\nThe Hoosiers' first goal came just three minutes into the second half when junior midfielder Kim Grodek was able to put in a goal with a header off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Ali Brown. Brown would strike again10 minutes later when she was able to score her first goal of the season after beating a Marshall defender deep in the Thundering Herd zone. Brown said she faked out the Marshall defense for her goal.\n"All year, the coaches have been telling me to shoot more," Brown said. "I saw that (freshman forward Megan) Pipkens and (freshman forward Missy) Vierling were making their runs, and they looked like they were going to be off-sides, so I just used them as a decoy and dribbled around the defense. I saw I was open, so I just hit it."\nIn the second half, the Hoosier forwards were able to constantly apply pressure on Marshall. The Herd had a difficult time keeping the ball in its possession which eventually led to two more Indiana goals. DeFreece got her first goal of the season when she lofted a shot over the Marshall goalie. Grodek said the team was able to beat the Marshall defense often in the second half.\n"In the second half, we found the through balls, the forwards did a great job of getting around [the Marshall defenders], and we were able to find the alleys," Grodek said.\nThe Hoosiers head to Michigan to take on Michigan Friday night, and then Michigan State, Sunday.\n-- Contact staff writer Cory Steger at csteger@indiana.edu.
