Corydon celebrates past on July 5, 6

First state capitol to hold annual event

CORYDON, Ind. -- As the state's first capital, Corydon was once the centerpiece of Indiana. While that was 190 years ago, Corydon has never lost its ability to attract visitors to its history-rich capital building.\nOn July 5 and 6, visitors from across the state and beyond will once again flock to Corydon to participate in Corydon Capital Days -- once known as Old Settlers Day.\nThe two-day event will be filled with entertainment and other activities which organizers hope will bring in large crowds.\n"This began in 1980 as a one-day event," said Bec Riley, assistant property manager for the Corydon Capital historic site. "It was just too much work for one day, so we moved it to the weekend."\nThe event will be kicked off by a barbecue and band concert July 4 at the historic square.\nThere will be plenty of entertainment and food for visitors to enjoy. A variety of music -- from a string band and gospel to the Soggy Bottom Boys -- will perform. An Ohio man will teach visitors how to play cricket, and visitors also will be able to practice the proper etiquette of afternoon tea.\nOne of the main attractions will be a living history area where re-enacters will set up camp near the state capital site.\n"We have a wonderful facility here to host something like this," Riley said. "It's right in the middle of town and we hope this brings visitors to our historic site. We want people to come so we can educate them on the history here"
