GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- About 80 Indiana reservists have returned from the war in Iraq, stepping off a plane into the arms of waiting loved ones.\nFifty Marines and about 30 members of the Air National Guard's 434th Air Refueling Wing returned from overseas duty Friday to the Grissom Air Reserve Base.\nThe state still has 4,244 reservists called to active duty, including two National Guard infantry battalions that account for about 1,300 of those troops.\nOfficials with the Indiana Guard could not say when Indiana units might begin coming home in greater numbers. Their orders say the units can remain on active duty for up to a year. The orders can be extended another year.\nThat only made Friday's homecoming sweeter for Air Force Master Sgt. Kevin Cassidy.\n"The hard part was being away from these guys," Cassidy, 38, of Noblesville, said amid kisses and hugs from his family.\nOutside the hangar, gear was being unloaded from the two KC-135 Stratotankers that returned the group to Grissom.\nThe unit runs a wing of flying service stations that gas up fighters, bombers and cargo planes at an altitude of about 35,000 feet. Most of its members already have returned, but 50 remain overseas.\nThe unit suffered no casualties while they worked in and around Iraq, said the wing's spokesman, Lt. Col. Gary Lockard.\nHours later, about 50 Marines from Communications Company Detachment 1, 4th Force Service Support Group, arrived after serving six months in the Middle East.\nThat unit lost one Marine during the war. Lance Cpl. Matthew Smith was killed May 10 in a traffic accident in Kuwait.
