How on earth do you follow up two platinum albums? Wait four years between records? Four years is a lifetime in today's music fan attention span. Third Eye Blind decided to make us wait anyway. Was it even worth the wait? Probably so. Out of the Vein picks up right where the previous records left off. The record is littered with the same big, catchy choruses that Third Eye Blind have boasted before, and it also oozes with sexual references and Stephan Jenkins' trademark clever wordplay. In fact, the lyric sheet reads like a romance novel of lost love and the clarity one comes to after some time to reflect. Whatever girl Jenkins is writing about really did a number on him, as he reveals a new vulnerability that results in some of his best writing and playing to date. These sad, emotional songs are the place where Jenkins and Third Eye Blind truly shine. The band abandons the reserved sound of their previous work and instead opts to finally just rock out. This is the album fans should expect, a little more rambunctious, but a little less charming than the debut.
