Give group exercise a try

The new year and pre-spring break fitness frenzy has passed leaving some of us with little motivation to stay active. While the hint of warmer weather may prompt many of us to keep moving, it is human nature that on some days we need more than the signs of spring to inspire us to exercise. \nOn days like that let me suggest you try a group exercise class. After all, birds of a feather flock together, as they say.\nAs a physician, I am always looking for ways to help people take better care of themselves. It is clear that exercise is one way to do that. It offers specific physical benefits by reducing the risk of some forms of heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity.\nRegular exercise can also help reduce anxiety and symptoms of depression as well as increase our overall energy level. The various current recommendations for exercising have, however, left some people confused. \nHow much is enough? How often? Lift, push and pull how much weight? Without any shame, let's face it; sometimes it is nice to be a follower. So on those days when you need a little help, join the group and let someone else figure it out. \nTaking a group exercise class has definite benefits and certain advantages:\n• You don't have to do it alone. Whatever the activity, there is someone else in there sweating away too. Exercising with a group may keep individuals participants more motivated to exercise.\n• You can get your daily quota of healthy exercise AND enjoy the company of like-minded participants. \n• You can maximize your efforts within a short period of time. Classes last a specific amount of time, usually 30 to 60 minutes. The trend is to make group exercise classes shorter, so you can get in and out and enjoy the rest of your action-packed day.\n• You can get to know people and group exercise leaders who anticipate your presence. The reality is that it's a little harder to skip out if you know someone is expecting you. Any healthy thing you can do to keep the odds in your favor of maintaining your fitness plan is worth trying.\n• You can learn a new activity you might be otherwise willing to do on your own. The SRSC offers classes for beginners to the advanced such as indoor cycling, step, hip-hop, kick-bo, water exercise, and even belly dancing. More exercise options keeps it interesting! \n• You can let someone else do the motivating. Group fitness leaders are trained to guide you through the work out safely, to take your mind of the work, and to help make the time go by quickly.\nThere is a saying among health care professionals, "Never worry alone!" When we need help we are trained to call in the specialist, we talk to our colleagues, and we continually educate ourselves by reading and attending conferences. \nLet me suggest this. The next time you find yourself in an exercise rut, don't sit there alone! Branch out, decide to have a new adventure, and give group exercise a try.
