After a long silence, Eric Idle is back to his old antics. Most commonly known for his work with Monty Python, The Rutland Isles is a documentary comedy where Nigel Spasm visits remote places in the Rutland Isles and shares comedic stories along with anecdotes about the inhabitants of the isles. Having experience with Monty Python, it is safe to say that not everyone will enjoy this CD. It is vulgar, sophomoric, weird and more entertaining than the time in high school when we duct-taped a naked swimmer to the diving board right before gym class began. Despite this album being thoroughly enjoyable, the novelty does wear off. At first the concept of an entire album dedicated to a comedic parody of an island explorer was cool and innovative, but it could have benefited from some more exciting tangents. Sadly, this has the lasting power of a Celine Dion greatest hits album. But unlike Dion, Eric Idle can make listeners laugh with more than just his looks, and he's not Canadian. Regardless, it's just nice to finally hear something from one of the Monty Python boys.
English comedy still hasn't left us
