Hitting the notes

Students, friends and families packed the IU Auditorium over the weekend to watch the greek community and residential houses compete in the 71st annual IU Sing. Despite the bad weather, 21 groups came together to lighten up campus, surpassing many people's expectations of the event. \n"It was by far the best IU Sing we've ever had," said Cori Sharrett Stage Director and Head of Judges and Awards.\nBeating out all of the talents of the other acts, Kappa Alpha Theta and Kappa Sigma were awarded first place in Division A and both the Best Vocal and Choreography awards.\nKappa Sigma member and third-year performer Alex Lesko seemed to think that his group definitely deserved its recognition. \n"I don't think we worked harder than other groups," he said. "We had very talented dancers and a great choreographer." \nGroup choreographer and voice major Molly Michalek said the group worked very well together. "Everyone added what they could, where they could," she said. "I was very proud."\nTaking home second place in Division A was Alpha Phi, Delta Upsilon and Kappa Alpha Rho, while third place went to Phi Gamma Delta and Kappa Delta. \nThe Best Costume Award, sponsored by Costume Delights, was given to Chi Phi, while Chi Omega and Zeta Beta Tau took home the best entertainment award. The Dr. George E. Schlafer Award, in memory of the founder of IU Sing, was given to Phi Mu for best spirit\nIn Division B, Forrest and Willkie Quads were awarded first place. Delta Gamma and Sigma Chi took home second place, while the trio of Pi Beta Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Delta Kappa Epsilon were given third place. \nServing as a song leader for Delta Upsilon and Alpha Xi Delta last year, senior Justin Grant chose to work as a songleader-producer this year, overlooking three different acts. He felt that he got a better view of IU Sing as a whole this year. \n"Last year it was very technical orientated," he said. "This year I got a more macro view of IU Sing."\nHe went on to say the different viewpoints helped him understand the meaning of the event and the IU Student Foundation. \n"I've grown a large amount of appreciation for IU sing," he said. "IUSF is just a great way to get involved on campus"
