Now their room is called the "athletic room" of Briscoe-Gucker 3. With bright yellow walls, green lockers for a new television stand and brand new red comforters and mattress covers, the boys were pretty stunned with their room's transformation.\n"I'm not quite pleased with the colors," Davis said while he sat in his new red tractor-seat desk chair. "The walls are a little flamboyant, and I don't understand how the carpet goes with anything in the room," he said pointing to the tan mat in the middle of the floor.\nTelevision's "Inside Edition" teamed up with the home furnishing company, IKEA, and came to IU's Briscoe Quad Saturday and Sunday to repaint and redecorate for a segment to be aired on WISH TV's Channel 8 on Wed., Nov. 13.\nAfter seeing the success of The Learning Channel's "Trading Spaces" and the BBC's "Changing Rooms" -- hit television shows where two sets of neighbors switch rooms and secretly redecorate -- "Inside Edition" chose to revamp IU dorm rooms partly due to the show joining up with the Indianapolis station. IU was also chosen because of its "fun people" and "great school" reputation.\nThe show's producer, Colum Ward, said the show took two solid days of shooting with five people flown in from New York and numerous local assistants hired to help with various on-site tasks. Ward said students helped with much of the leg work as well.\n"We heard IU was a good school and had great people," Ward said before he was interrupted by his cell phone.\n"No. No don't let them see it yet, Victoria," he said into the phone. "No, Victoria, don't let them see the room yet!" He then directed the cameraman down the hall to tape the reaction of the student residents. \nJulie Greenberg, story coordinator for the show, said all 280 rooms in Gucker Tower were given a new lamp and rug. Forty rooms were also given new duvet covers, rugs and curtains, and 20 rooms were given all the above accessories along with new paint jobs. A final four were chosen to receive full makeovers and each was given a theme. \nTwo female rooms on Gucker-2 were named the "romantic" and "social" rooms, and two male rooms were named the "techie" and "athletic" rooms. Students were chosen based on their enthusiasm to participate in the makeover tasks.\n"The producer thought I was charismatic because I had a beer in my hand and was in a bathrobe at 10 in the morning," Davis said. His "charismatic" qualities are what he said won him his room's sporty theme. \nFreshman Jenny Johnson, now a resident of the "romantic" room complete with bright pink walls and psychedelic-like orange and pink bed covers, wasn't pleased with the "bright" color choice at first.\nThe show plans to hire professional painters at the end of the school year to comply with the University's rules to return the rooms back to their original state. \n"Yesterday, I wasn't sure about the pink," Johnson said. "I was going to tell them if they didn't paint it back, I didn't want the walls painted." \nJohnson's roommate, freshman Andrea Thoennes, said she also didn't take to the pink at first.
\n"I didn't necessarily like it, but it's put together real well," Thoennes said. "I would expect that from a TV show hiring designers to come in."\nJanice Simonsen, one of two IKEA designers who were sent in to give the rooms their colorful conversions, said the company has done a number of other remodeling projects including a spot on "Oprah" and a piece for Rosie magazine. They've also done work for community centers and women's shelters, but Simonsen said this weekend's IU project was the biggest they've taken on.\n"It was a lot of fun to transform the rooms," Simonsen said. "We're happy to be here. IKEA actually provides college students with a lot of decorating solutions, and we hope we've done that here."\nThe biggest benefit to students like Jake Phillips, one of the proud residents of a remodeled room, is the free merchandise which students get to keep upon the show's completion.\n"It's great," Phillips said. "I love free stuff, especially since I'm a college student. We need free things once in a while"
