Thanks for the memories

IU lost a legend when Howard "Howdy" Wilcox, 82, passed away Monday.\nAn IU alum who obtained his degree in journalism in 1942, Wilcox was a member of Alpha Tau Omega, served as IU Foundation President and was on the IU Board of Trustees from 1962 to 65.\nHis campus involvement should be an eye-opener to everyone, especially when reflecting on his tremendous achievements. \nThe founder of the IU Student Foundation made the Bloomington campus the home of the "World's Greatest College Weekend," founding the Little 500 and modeling it after the Indianapolis 500, which his father won in 1919.\nNow, the world-renowned sporting event brings thousands of people together in IU stride.\nWhile watching students ride their bikes around the hall in a dorm, Wilcox's ideas for a biking competition began to muster. \n"He literally called people in the middle of the night, different administrators, giving them ideas," said Alex Ihnen, Little 500 coordinator and assistant director of IUSF.\nThat is the kind of dedication we at IU should strive to achieve.\nIt's because of people like Wilcox that great IU traditions are made -- not just because he established the Little 500, but also because his love for life and extreme devotion to the University make him an excellent role model for all.\nThanks for the memories, Howdy. We'll miss you.
