Singer Jewel coming to IU Auditorium in November

Concert tickets go on sale Thursday for $35

Singer and songwriter Jewel Kilcher, widely known as "Jewel," will perform Nov. 21 at the IU Auditorium. Tickets go sale 10 a.m. Thursday. \nJewel's on tour promoting her album, "This Way," which was released in November 2001. \n"She's one of the most celebrated and respected female artists," said senior Adam Blake, Union Board Concerts director.\nBlake said he expects the 3,200 tickets allotted for the concert to sell quickly. He said Jewel's special performing style and the large number of her fans in the Midwest supports his claim. \n"It's a rare concert opportunity for the student body to be able to see her perform and listen to an acoustic show," Blake said. "Several of the markets she's played this summer in the Midwest have sold out."\nJewel has also traveled to many parts of the world on the tour, including Canada, Italy and Japan.\nDespite a sponsor's optimistic sales forecast of the event, some students question her popularity in the current entertainment market. \n"I don't think students care that much," said senior Joe Beamer. "She was popular five years ago, but she is not as popular as she used to be."\nFreshman Lauren Hagberg owns the first two of Jewel's three albums, "Pieces of You" and "Spirit," but she said she will not be the first person to buy a ticket.\n"If I would decide to go, I would get a ticket later," Hagberg said.\nHagberg said she doesn't think its fair that she paid $19 for a Jimmy Fallon ticket and tickets to Jewel costs $35.\nBeamer said the price is appropriate.\n"(The IU Auditorium) is a small venue, so that's a good justification for charging more," Beamer said. \nTickets will be sold on a first-come-first-served.\n"Some people camp out for tickets, and I think that's generally how it is," Beamer said. "It depends on how much people like Jewel."\nThe ticket price is $35.50 for students with a valid ID and $40.50 for non-students if purchased at the IU Auditorium Box Office or the Activities Desk in the Indiana Memorial Union.\nTickets are available from all Ticketmaster locations or by calling Ticketmaster at (812) 333-9955. An added fee will be assessed.
