Knight suit deadline extended

IU gives former basketball coach Bob Knight one month extension to sue

Former IU Basketball Coach Bob Knight now has one more month to decide whether or not to sue IU over his dismissal two years ago. Before the extension, Knight was supposed to have taken legal action by Monday.\nNow, Knight and his attorney, Russell Yates, will have until Oct. 11 to make a final decision.\nIU Counsel Dorothy Frapwell said Knight and his attorney asked the University for an extension because of issues regarding Knight's dismissal and contract, which are still being discussed between him and his attorney.\nAlthough Indiana's statute of limitations required Knight to take legal action within two years of his firing, the University agreed to extend his deadline.\nKnight was fired in 2000 by IU President Myles Brand regarding violations of a "zero-tolerance" policy that had been imposed upon Knight.\nIn March 2001, Yates filed a notice saying Knight might sue the University over wrongful dismissal. The notice said Knight suffered more than $7 million in lost income, mental humiliation and interference with employment prospects.\nKnight is now the head basketball coach of Texas Tech University.\nRecently, Knight settled a separate lawsuit with his former assistant coach Ron Felling for $25,000.\nFelling originally sued Knight and the University because he accused Knight of wrongfully firing him and shoving him into a large-screen TV.\nThe Associated Press contributed to this report.
