The 10 finest incoming freshmen to the Kelley School of Business were recently named Kelley Scholars. For the next four years, the scholarship recipients will not have to pay for tuition and other school fees and will possibly receive funding for internships and overseas study. The scholars will also receive a stipend for living expenses.\nThe program is funded by E.W. Kelley, an IU alumnus, and his family. Because of the $23 million gift, Indiana residents receive more than $12,000 annually while non-residents receive more than $22,000.\nIn his years at IU, Kelley founded the accounting club and was elected president of the Business School student body. According to the school's Web site, "he credits his experiences at IU and with its business program as fundamental to his success in the business world. Mr. Kelley established the scholarship program to offer top students the same opportunities to achieve and excel that he had while at IU."\n"I was lucky in that I had a number of people at IU who promoted me to big corporations, and that's how I got chances to prove myself," Kelley said. \nAfter receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the IU School of Business in 1939, Kelley founded Kelley & Partners Ltd. where he also serves as managing partner. He is also the chairman of Consolidated Products, Inc.\nTo be considered for the scholars program, students must be admitted to IU on or before Nov. 1 of their senior year in high school, note the intention of a business concentration or major, be ranked in the top 10 percent of their class, score at least a 1300 on the Standardized Aptitude Test or a 30 on the ACT and accept direct admission to the business school.\n"The Kelley Scholars program provides the opportunity for the Kelley School of Business and IU to attract and retain the best students in the world," said Dan Dalton, dean of the Kelley School of Business, in a recent press release.\n"The combo of the Kelley Scholars' special curriculum and level of financial support to the students is unparalleled in any school of business in the country." \nAfter being accepted into the program, Kelley Scholars must remain in good academic standing by maintaining a minimum 3.5 Grade Point Average, take at least 12 credit hours each semester and fully take part in all areas of the Kelley Scholars Program, which includes extracurricular activities. These students are also required to take part in the Business Honors Program.\n"I think it's a great honor. The competition was very stiff and the applicant pool was very deserving," said Nathan McAninch, a recently named Kelley Scholar and incoming IU freshman from Harrison High School in West Lafayette. "I'm definitely looking forward to coming to IU and getting a good business education."\nKelley said the most important characteristic of a Kelley Scholar is perseverance.\n"No matter how successful you become, keep working harder and smarter and achieve more," he said. "It is in this spirit that we worked to create the scholarship program"
