Women's team splits games with 1 win, 1 loss out west

Forward McGinnis carries team in weekend tourney

The women's basketball team escaped from the weekend's talent-rich Stanford Invitational with a victory and a loss. After falling to No. 9 Stanford 87-72 Friday night in Palo Alto, Calif., the Hoosiers knocked off Western Kentucky 85-70 in the consolation game.\nStanford claimed the tournament title over UC Santa Barbara 87-64.\nStanford 87, IU 72\nFour IU players scored in double figures as the Hoosiers hung close to Stanford (2-0) but couldn't overtake the Cardinal's imposing lineup.\nIU crept to within two points at 52-50 with 12:40 remaining, but Cardinal senior Lauren St. Clair hit a three-pointer that triggered a Stanford run. In the final five minutes, Stanford didn't lead by fewer than 11 points. Senior forward Erin McGinnis stood out for the Hoosiers with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, seven rebounds and four assists. \n"I wasn't hesitating with my shot," McGinnis said. "I thought I was hesitating a little during the exhibition games, so I made sure that I wasn't going to keep doing that." \nSenior center Jill Chapman followed with 18 points and an assist, and senior shooting guard Heather Cassady added 15 points. After sitting out the Hoosiers' final preseason exhibition game with a strained hamstring, junior Kristen Bodine returned as starting point guard with 14 points.\nStanford didn't start a player shorter than 5-11 and commanded the boards, out rebounding IU 50-27. The Cardinal had 27 offensive rebounds to the Hoosiers' 10.\nFinishing 11-of-19 from the field, senior Lindsey Yamasaki led Stanford with 27 points and 13 rebounds. \nLast season Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Nicole Powell tallied 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for her second career triple-double. Powell's assist total equaled IU's team total. Bethany Donaphin added 15 points for the Cardinal.\n"Their depth really showed," head coach Kathi Bennett said in a press release. "They were getting second-chance points and were doing well on the offensive boards. They were able to score on those and that really hurt us."\nIU 85, Western Kentucky 70\nThe Hoosiers (1-1) gained revenge on the team that eliminated them from the WNIT tournament last postseason. Cassady carried IU with 24 points -- three. points shy of her career high -- and five assists. \nThe Hoosiers shot 87.5 percent from the free-throw line compared to the Hilltoppers' 66.7 percent.\nMcGinnis completed her solid weekend with 18 points and 10 rebounds Saturday. She shot six-of-eight for three-point distance over the weekend. Chapman contributed 13 points and sophomore Jamie Gathing came off the bench picking up 12 points in 17 minutes.\nFour Western Kentucky players scored more than five points each, as sophomore Leslie Logsdon guided with 27 points. IU led Western Kentucky (0-2) 32-29 at halftime. The Hoosiers applied a 20-10 run in the second half to build its lead to 66-49. Their lead swelled to as many as 18 points. \nSenior guard Tara Jones limited Hilltopper senior guard Natalie Powers to nine points. Powers averaged 22.3 points last season and ranked ninth in the nation in three-point percentage (44.2 percent).\n"T.J. did a great job on (Powers)," Bennett said. "She shadowed her and really defended her well. We were not going to let Powers beat us, and our girls just stuck to the game plan and defended screens really well"
