Women test knowledge

AOPi shows its sports wizardry

The women of Alpha Omicron Pi know sports. And they aren't afraid to show it.\nSunday, the sorority's intramural sports trivia team, consisting of seniors Dana Sitarz and Ann Poosuthasee and juniors Maria Delimata and Natasha Heimer, was in first place heading into the third round of an intramural sports trivia contest held at the Student Recreational Sports Center Auditorium.\nIn fact, Alpha Omicron Pi (AOPi) had the only perfect score in the first round. As amazing as the accomplishment seemed, the ladies didn't think that there was anything strange about it.\nHere at IU, among other areas, the women of AOPi are making a name for themselves in sports trivia.\n"We haven't been around a lot of the guys we play against," Heimer said. "We were just as shocked as anyone else."\nAs she waited for the third round, Sitarz said the team was having fun.\n"That's all we're here for, to have fun," she said. "If we beat down some guys along the way, that's cool."\nThe trivia contest consists of four rounds, each with different questions and subjects. The first two rounds are played through a Web site, and there is no elimination. The third round was played as a test, with questions being flashed on a projection screen in the SRSC Auditorium for all the teams to answer.\nThere is no elimination until the third round because "we wanted to keep everybody participating," said Stacey Hall-Yannessa, assistant director of intramural and club sports.\nThe fourth round is played by the two teams with the highest total scores from the first three rounds. The fourth round is conducted in the style of ESPN's "Two Minute Drill", with teams having two to three minutes to answer as many questions as possible.\nThe first two rounds are where AOPi were able to use their best skill, research.\nThough the girls seem to have better research skills than the guys, they also have a varied background in sports. All of the women played high school sports, Delimata is on the IU women's crew team and as a whole, AOPi is currently the leader in women's intramural sports. Also, all of them have knowledge in specific sports.\nThe third round consisted of 40 questions that flashed on a projection screen for 20 seconds each. The questions were about a wide range of sports, such as basketball, hockey, football, international sports like soccer and cricket, and various other questions. The women of AOPi were in high spirits as the round began, and as the questions flashed, there was a mixture of laughter and frustration present in their voices. The women of AOPi now had to rely on their wits, and not their research skills.\nAfter the round was over, the ladies had a different expression on their faces.\nHeimer summed up the feeling: "We are definitely not making it… We definitely did not do good, but we're still the top sorority team (in overall intramurals), so we're happy." Sitarz said about their answers, "We trust our gut."\nThe top two teams after three rounds -- Chi Phi and Fiji -- met in the finals Sunday night. Fiji won, 19-17.\nWhen the scores came out, that feeling of defeat started to arise, but the AOPi team didn't let it stay for long.\n"We just came to play, just for fun," Poosuthasee said.
