Forum brings Brand to students

IU President Myles Brand will field questions from an audience of students tonight.\nHe will introduce himself, explain his duties, then embark on a question-and-answer session with students from 7-8 p.m. today in Woodburn Hall 100.\nThough the event is open to everyone, only students will be allowed to ask questions.\n"We feel that as president he has an obligation to speak to the students," said IU Student Association President Jake Oakman, a senior. "I feel this will be a positive event and hopefully one that will continue on an annual basis."\nThe session with Brand is the centerpiece of the IU Student Association's Lecture Series.\nToday marks one year after Brand fired former men's basketball coach Bob Knight. \nFrom Oakman's end, the timing is just a coincidence.\nWhat Brand talks about is pretty much up to the students, Oakman said, although IUSA has imposed a limit of two questions per topic because the talk is an hour-long.\n"If there are tough questions people ask him, that's fair game," Oakman said.\nBut civility and respect are expected from both ends.\nIUSA will give students the opportunity to engage in open question and answer sessions with top University officials during its regular meetings all semester.\nWhen campaigning for IUSA offices, the Supernova ticket promised to work on improving relations between the student body and the administration. They plan to fulfill that promise with the IUSA Lecture Series.\nEvery two weeks at the IUSA Congress meeting, one or two administrators will be invited to come to the meeting to give a description of their job duties and field questions from the audience and members of student government.
