'Unfaithful:' Emotions to the extreme

'Fatal Attraction' director scores another sinful hit

Unfaithful - R
Starring: Diane Lane, Richard Gere
Directed by: Adrian Lyne
Showing: Showplace West 12 If you thought "Fatal Attraction" was powerful, than director Adrian Lyne will shock you even more with his latest film "Unfaithful." Diane Lane, Richard Gere and Olivier Martinez deliver powerful performances as the stars of this depressing and thought provoking film. Connie (Diane Lane) and Edward Sumner (Richard Gere) have a happy life together with their adorable and humorous son Charlie (Erik Per Sullivan). Their small suburban home outside of Manhattan is a quiet and happy one. That is, until Connie accidentally stumbles across Paul Martel (Olivier Martinez), a sexy French guy she finds herself mesmerized by. You will grow to hate Connie. You will hate what she does to her family. What will really get to you is the fact she doesn't even seem to love Paul. Instead, she is only infatuated with the idea of him being there for her whenever she's horny. It's blatantly obvious that he is using her for sex. She seems to not mind that because she's a slut. This movie will tear you apart. It's hard to really understand why Connie does any of this when she knows it will completely destroy her family. You can't predict what will happen. It's shocking and will make you want to vomit and cry at the same time. The amazing thing about this movie is its ability to draw you in emotionally, whether you like it or not. You feel Connie's confusion and guilt, but you also feel Edward's pain and suffering when he discovers what's going on. There are points in the movie where you will be scared to death of what will happen next and what could possibly be done to solve all the problems. It draws you in, and you forget you're even in the theatre. The movie is depressing. The only humor comes through their son, Charlie. In the screwed-up world we live in, this movie at least sends the truthful message that what comes around, goes around. Lies and cheating can only end in disaster. "Unfaithful" works with this principle, and thus becomes an emotionally torturous film.
