'Black Knight' not as bad as it looks

Black Knight - PG-13 Starring: Martin Lawrence Directed by: Gil Junger Showing: Showplace West 12

As I sat down to watch the movie "Black Knight," I looked around and noticed there were only five people in the theater. I didn't know much about the new flick, so I figured it must not have been such a big hit. But after sitting through a few minutes of the movie, I realized this light-hearted comedy was not going to be so bad.\nThe movie begins by introducing star comedian Martin Lawrence as Jamal Walker, an ordinary guy in Los Angeles who works at a theme park. He falls into a moat at "Castle World" when reaching for a gold necklace and finds the setting quickly changes from the hectic streets of L.A. in 2001 to a peaceful, quiet forest in 1328. \nWandering from the forest, Jamal finds a castle crawling with peasants, lords and a king who becomes convinced Jamal is sent from Normandy. Thinking what he is seeing is really the new "Castle World," Jamal introduces himself to a beautiful young woman across the village and finds her name is Victoria (Marsha Thomason). He asks her a few questions, such as if she owned a thong and what her number was, getting a not so common response. \nWalking around the village, Jamal makes many references to modern times, but soon finds out he is actually in the year 1328, and bears the medallion of the person who was sent to kill King Leo (Kevin Conway) and bring back the Queen. This information overwhelms Jamal, but he eventually takes on a task filled with adventure, excitement and danger as he accidentally falls into becoming a hero among the people and a leader of a rebellion against King Leo. \nDancing to the music of "Ride Sally Ride," Martin Lawrence makes you laugh-out-loud in many scenes and plays his usual, funny self in a comedy that leaves you with a happy ending and an open door of a possible sequel.\nOkay, so this movie probably won't win a Grammy. It is not a laugh-till-you-cry, action packed film that makes you want to walk away raving to all your friends. But Lawrence does keep you smiling with a storyline where everyone lives happily ever after. That is, until he falls back into the stream. But we'll just leave that for the sequel.
