White rural rap... really, we're not joking

Dark Days Bright Nights Bubba Sparxxx Interscope Records

White rappers are about as common as black hockey players. White rappers have come and gone and most have had talent. But to survive in the white rapping world, one needs a schtick. Snow was an amazingly fast rapper with a Jamaican accent. And Eminem is just about as talented as a rapper can get, but has probably lasted because of his ability to easily offend … well, everyone. Now enters Bubba Sparxxx, the first successful rural rapper. No, he doesn't rap with country music, he is just a big white boy from Georgia with rhymes on his lips.\nHis debut album Dark Days Bright Nights is a great opportunity for Sparxxx to show the world that just because you live in the rural South, doesn't mean you can't rap like you're from the ghetto. The album starts off strongly with the track "Take Off," an obvious metaphor for Bubba's flight to success, and is followed up by his single "Ugly," a song that introduces Bubba as a talented rapper from the South. The songs continue on similar subjects about the South and Sparxxx's rapping style, but soon become redundant and you don't realize which track is playing.\nSparxxx can rap, even as a Southern white boy, but he is just missing content. You can only handle a couple of songs about how amazing the singer thinks he is and how his rapping skills are just as good as the rest. There are some good philosophies he throws into the mix about how color shouldn't matter and that all of us are the same deep down inside. He will probably soon be the spokesman for the South and will do the job perfectly. \nMany people think that just because someone lives in the country, they listen to country, but Bubba Sparxxx proves this theory wrong. Sparxxx has the right attitude and talent, but he might need to work on his niche in the music world if he wants to be more successful. Maybe he should work on his Caribbean accent or start writing about killing his wife; it's worked for the other guys. \nRating: 6
