With another Homecoming come and gone, a new queen and king have been chosen to represent IU. Senior Elizabeth Kienzler and junior Arty Allen are the newly elected monarchs who will carry the title for the next year.\nFifty-one women and seven men signed up this year and had to have a 2.6 GPA and 86 credit hours before filling out an application.\n"The application asked about their interests and activities," said senior Shannon Hoffman, the Student Athletic Board's Homecoming director. "They also had to list leadership positions they held, and a success and a failure, and if they had the opportunity, what they would change here at IU."\nAfter the application, the students were narrowed down to 10 women and only seven men because that was all who applied. From there, the applicants were taken through the interview process.\nThe interview was 15 minutes long and asked a variety of questions such as, "What does being king or queen mean to you?" The students were judged on appearance, poise and composure.\nFrom the interview, the judges could narrow the students down to the final five men and women who would be on the court, and to the eventual winners announced during halftime of Saturday's football game. The winners walked away with the title and a scholarship of $1,000.\n"The king and queen do get the title and money," said Hoffman. "But they also get to represent the school at the highest level."\nKienzler, named Homecoming queen, is a member of Phi Mu sorority. She is on the steering committee for the IU Student Foundation and chairperson for Dance Marathon.\n"I am excited," said Kienzler. "I applied for the scholarship but I am very excited just to be in Homecoming. I am just very surprised to get the title."\nAllen, crowned as Homecoming king, is a member of OUT, an Orientation leader for Willkie Quad and a member of National Honor Society.\n"I am so shocked because this wasn't expected, because I ran as an openly gay man," he said. "I thought I was qualified even though I wasn't fitting the stereotype of a Homecoming king. I went into interview representing myself as myself -- a gay man. I think the Homecoming king should be diverse."\nNow that the festivities are over, Student Athletic Board president Suzi Shane, a senior, said everything went smoothly.\n"It went very well. We had a nice group of people who applied," she said. "The judges asked questions that showed the people's knowledge and involvement at Indiana University"
