IU became the first major institution of higher education to prohibit the purchasing of products derived from old growth forests.\nOld growth means a proportion of the forests' trees have nearly reached their maximum age.\nThe campus environmental group, Student Environmental Action Coalition, submitted a proposal to the trustees that would force IU's purchasing department to resist buying products from old growth forests. The proposal passed unanimously.\n"This is a tremendous step toward creating a more environmentally sensitive campus," said Sarah Uhlemann, a member of SEAC. "It's great that the university is willing to take a lead in being an environmentally accountable institution"
