MSU divers capture competition

Rookie Week helps new riders experience difficulty of race; athletes train through cold

A story written about the diving at the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championship this weekend would essentially be a story about the divers from Michigan State. \nMSU's Summer Mitchell placed first in the 1-meter and third in the 3-meter and teammate Carly Weiden finished third in the 1-meter competition and won the 3-meter. \nThe honors don't stop there. Weiden was named Big Ten Diver of the Year and shared the honor of Diver of the Championships with Mitchell. Michigan State diving coach John Narcy was named Diving Coach of the Year. \n After capturing third place in Friday's 3-meter competition, Weiden was happy. \n "This is awesome," she said. "After the preliminaries this morning, I just wanted to come in here and have fun. Fortunately I was able to win."\n Weiden finished the competition with a total of 507.95 points, narrowly beating Penn State's Jaime Jaxx, who finished with 504.5 points. Mitchell finished third with 495.7 points.\n"Both my teammate and I dove awesome," she said. "The Lord wanted it this way, so I am excited. All the divers deserve credit. We're all awesome." \nTheir coach agrees.\n"We won this during the summer," Narcy said. "Both girls trained very hard over the summer. This is when that pays off. With these girls competing and training together all year, either one of them could have done it. And they both did."\nSaturday night was the finals for the platform diving. Of the eight women competing in the finals, three were Hoosiers. \nOhio State's Natalia Diea finished first with 429.45 points, beating Iowa's Laura Maldonado by nearly 60 points.\n"I'm really happy with the way I dove," Diea said. "This is just a good preview for the NCAA (Championships), and that is what I'm really looking towards. But this is great."\nOf the three Hoosiers who qualified for the platform finals, sophomore Jessica Williams finished the highest, landing in third place with a total of 326.15 points.\n"I was happy with my performance," Williams said. "I expected to make the finals, and I didn't know what to expect after that. I've been doing this list for a while, so I'm pretty comfortable with it."\nThe two other Hoosiers performed well. Sophomore Lori Matthys finished in fifth place with 344.05 points and Mamie Goodson placed seventh with 321.2 points.
