Columnist buys into partisan rhetoric

Joseph S. Pete's Nov. 28 column, "Impeach the president-elect," obviously favors Al Gore hands down. Now, I understand the article is an "Opinion" column, so one should expect opinionated views. \nWhat annoys me, though, is the bigger picture that Pete reflects. Basically, there are partisans on both party sides, and they do and say almost anything (including omitting facts relevant to the opposition's stance) to rationalize their own candidate's tactics.\nPete notes (as do many Gore backers) that 22,000 or so votes for Gore were thrown out, implying that if they were counted, Gore would win -- hence Gore's litigation.\nThrough this whole mess, Gore's mantra has been: "I want every vote to count." Then, he usually blathers on about democracy and the poor Floridians being robbed of their chance to vote fairly. The truth of the matter is if Gore is so concerned about all votes counting, he should have all the ballots in all the state that were thrown out re-counted.\nOf course, I guess Gore (and dare I say Pete?) must believe re-counts in three democratic counties in Florida is not only fair but the "will of the people."\nBy now, I am sure people are thinking I am a Bush backer, but, truth be told (and I'm embarrassed to say), I voted for "Every Vote Counts" Gore.\nBut I digress…\nThe bottom line is that no matter who gets in, we are going to be stuck with four years of having a ding-dong for a president! I can only hope the congressmen and senators are able to drop their partisan bias and get on with the business of the nation.\nOf course, now that I think about it, that's about as likely to happen as Pete voting Republican!
